University of Macau Symphony Orchestra (UMSO)
Established in September 2025, the University of Macau Symphony Orchestra (UMSO) marks an important step in the University’s commitment to promoting arts and culture on campus. With the mission of nurturing young musical talent, enriching campus cultural life, and fostering artistic exchange, the orchestra is dedicated to provide passionate student musicians with a high-level platform for symphonic training, performance practice, and intercultural engagement. Since its establishment, the orchestra has not only been active on the University’s artistic stage, but has also taken on the mission of bringing together artistic forces on campus, broadening students’ horizons, and connecting the University with the wider community through music.
As a fully instrumented symphony orchestra, UMSO comprises strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, and currently has around 100 members from different faculties and academic disciplines across the University. United by a shared passion for music, members continuously refine their performance skills and ensemble unity through systematic rehearsals and performances. By interpreting symphonic works from different periods and styles, they further deepen their understanding of symphonic music and strengthen their interpretative abilities. For members, participation in the orchestra is not only a pursuit of artistic excellence, but also a journey of growth in discipline, responsibility, collaboration, and personal cultivation.
The orchestra places great importance on external exchange and cultural connection, striving to use music as a bridge that transcends language and geography. It actively builds ties with music institutions, performing arts groups, and young musicians from different regions, promoting artistic exchange and mutual understanding. In November 2025, the orchestra made its first public appearance before the Macao community at the 2025 GEG Lusofonia Festival, successfully completing its debut performance since its establishment. The performance was met with wide acclaim, marking an important opening chapter in the orchestra’s development and the beginning of its journey in sharing the beauty of music with the Macao community.
Rooted in Macao, where Chinese and Portuguese cultures converge, UMSO will continue to express the city’s distinctive cultural character and artistic charm through sincere and refined musical expression. Under the baton of conductor Mr. Sa Ng, the orchestra moves steadily forward towards ever higher artistic achievement, writing a moving musical chapter for the University of Macau with youthful passion and steadfast dedication
